Getting your hair colored is an exciting experience, but it’s important to know what to do (and what not to do) to maintain your vibrant color. We spoke with top hairstylists to gather their expert tips on how to care for your colored hair and prolong its longevity.
#1: Wait Before Washing
Celebrity hairstylist Glenn Ellis advises waiting at least two to three days after getting your hair colored before washing it. This will allow the color to set in and not get washed out. Try to stretch the time between your color appointment and your first shampoo at home as long as possible, according to Lorena M. Valdes, a colorist at Maxine Salon in Chicago.
#2: Use the Right Shampoo
Using the correct shampoo is crucial for keeping your color healthy and vibrant. According to Jennifer Korab, a celebrity hairstylist, it is her number one must-do after getting your hair colored. Choose a shampoo that is specifically designed for color-treated hair, as this will help maintain the longevity of the color.
#3: Skip Sulfates
Sulfates can strip both color and moisture from your hair, so it’s essential to avoid them. Ellis suggests using sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to help maintain your color. Korab also recommends a sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo like Pureology Hydrate, which contains an anti-fade complex that helps ensure your color lasts.
#4: Wash with Lukewarm Water
Although hot showers are relaxing, they’re not ideal for maintaining your hair color. Hot water can open up your hair’s cuticle, causing the color to wash out. Instead, Korab suggests washing your hair with lukewarm or cool water. This helps to maintain your color and promote shine by closing the hair’s cuticle.
#5: Use a Shower Filter
Water that is high in minerals, such as chlorine, can also strip your hair of color. To combat this, consider installing a shower filter that removes these minerals from the water.
#6: Moisturize Regularly
Colored hair needs more moisture than uncolored hair, so it’s essential to use a hydrating conditioner regularly. Korab recommends using a mask or deep conditioner once a week to keep your hair healthy and vibrant.
#7: Protect Your Hair from Heat
Heat can cause damage to colored hair, so it’s important to use heat-protectant products when styling with hot tools like curling irons or straighteners.
#8: Avoid Overwashing
Overwashing can also strip your hair of color, so it’s essential to find a washing frequency that works for you. Ellis recommends washing every three to four days, while Valdes suggests using dry shampoo in between washes.
#9: Schedule Regular Touch-Ups
Maintaining your color doesn’t end after your first appointment. Regular touch-ups can help to keep your color vibrant and your hair healthy. Speak with your stylist about how often you should schedule touch-ups based on your hair type and color.
