Hairstyle trends have a way of coming back around, and there's one particular haircut that's making a major comeback. Need a clue? Think of a classic phrase: business in the front, party in the back. If that didn't give it away, don't worry. We're excited to announce the resurgence of the mullet haircut.
But this isn't the same divisive hairstyle from the '80s. Celebrities are reimagining the mullet, giving it a fresh and modern feel. Here's how you can rock this look yourself.
The Revival of the Mullet
One reason for its return is rebellion. “People are gravitating towards being the opposite of everyone else,” says celebrity hairstylist David Lopez. “And the opposite of the long layers and bobs that everyone has is a mullet.” In other words, it allows them to embrace a grungier, cooler, and edgier vibe than their peers.
Moreover, the mullet has a gender-neutral appeal, according to Bumble and bumble stylist Tom Gallagher. It's a hairstyle that feels inclusive, both on and off the runway.
Who Can Pull It Off
The mullet is truly versatile and suits everyone. However, considering your hair type can be helpful. “I don't think there are any hard and fast rules,” says Lopez, who believes in an inclusive approach to hairstyles. In other words, anyone can try any style. Nevertheless, Lopez particularly loves the mullet on wavy or curly hair textures.
Attitude also plays a role. “It's more about the individual's character and attitude than their age, gender, race, or hair texture,” says Gallagher. Ultimately, anyone can rock a mullet, and depending on how you style it, it can give off a punk or romantic vibe, or even a combination of both, offering more options than you might imagine.
Consulting Your Stylist
Since there are various types of mullets, it's a good idea to bring a visual reference to your stylist. This will help you both get on the same page. “Each haircut depends on finding the right balance and proportion that suits your personal style and taste,” explains Gallagher. Some may prefer a subtle mullet, with shorter hair in the front and longer layers in the back. For a more daring look, you can opt for a more pronounced contrast in length between the front and back.
In general, Lopez advises that your stylist will trim the sides a bit shorter and shape the haircut accordingly. However, keep in mind that the mullet is highly personalized, so there aren't strict guidelines for the stylist. “The shape itself is self-explanatory,” says Lopez. “It's shorter on the sides and longer on the top and back.”
Growing out your mullet is crucial to achieving the desired shape. “You just have to let it grow,” adds Lopez. Then, collaborate with your stylist to refine and shape it further.
Styling Tips
The beauty of the mullet is its versatility, allowing you to style it to your liking. If you want more volume, which is particularly beneficial for finer hair types, try a thickening spray like Verb Volume Spray. For thicker, coarser hair, Gallagher recommends using Bb. Sumo Liquid Wax + Finishing Spray to enhance definition and separation.
Feel free to experiment with your Cut. “I think the best way to style a mullet is to not style it at all,” suggests Lopez. “Using a styling cream would be a great option for those with wavy and curly hair types.” Consider trying Sebastian Professional Potion 9; Lopez highlights its lightweight formula that conditions your hair while still allowing your cut to maintain a natural look.
